16 Armenian soldiers were killed and another 100 were wounded during the fighting on the contact line with Azerbaijan. This was reported by press secretary of the Armenian Defense Ministry Shushan Stepanyan with reference to the Deputy Defense Minister of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Artur Sargsyan, RIA Novosti writes.
"According to preliminary data, 16 soldiers were killed and over 100 wounded from the Armenian side," said Shushan Stepanyan.
Today's morning, September 27, the command of the Azerbaijani army decided to launch a counter-offensive operation against the armed forces of Armenia along the entire front in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry confirmed the active phase of hostilities and specified that the Azerbaijani side launched missile strikes along the entire line of contact, as well as at peaceful settlements, including the capital of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Stepanakert.
Later, the government of Armenia declared martial law and general mobilization in the country.
The Council of Europe calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to show restraint and immediately end the hostilities. This statement was made by Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović-Burić.
“I am gravely concerned about reports of military escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. I call on our Member States Armenia and Azerbaijan to show responsibility and restraint by immediately stopping hostilities," the statement reads.
