Ukrainian Foreign Ministry presented a project to prevent bringing sailors to crimes done in the maritime space, protection of their rights for the just treatment during the trials, in the pre-trial detention facilities and the penitentiary facilities. The Consulate Service Department reported this on Facebook.
'As of October 9, over 290 Ukrainian sailors are held at penitentiary colonies abroad,' reads the message.
The vessels with Ukrainian sailors aboard were detained in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Libya, and Nigeria.
The sailors are most frequently arrested for transporting illegal migrants, explosives, and tobacco products to third countries.
The international federation of transport carriers and the International Maritime Organization confirmed their readiness to assist the Ukrainian side and the trade union of sea transport workers in every possible way.
