President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan took control of the city of Shusha in Nagorno-Karabakh. Aliyev announced this in his address to the nation.
"The date of November 8 will be forever remembered in the history of our country. The armed forces have taken control of Shusha," he said.
Shusha is one of the key cities of Nagorno-Karabakh, it is located 11 kilometers from the capital of the self-proclaimed republic of Stepanakert.
Armenia has not yet commented on Ilham Aliyev's statement. Earlier it was only reported that Stepanakert and Shusha came under rocket and artillery fire, as a result of which civilian infrastructure was damaged.
The escalation in the region began on September 27, when the Azerbaijani side fired at settlements, as well as military units in Karabakh. Then the motorized rifle and tank units of the Azerbaijani army launched an offensive in the northern, southern, and southeastern directions. The Armenian government has declared martial law in the country.
