President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Pedro Agramunt stated that he had become a "victim for his desire for dialogue" and that the campaign against him was led by Ukrainians. This is stated in his first appeal after the PACE initiated his resignation, Yevropeyska Pravda reports.
"Recent statements of French President Emmanuel Macron in Le Figaro and the Guardian demonstrate that his position on the Syrian crisis is not different from mine. Other leaders around the world also stated that it is imperative to involve all parties, including the current Syrian government, in the dialogue. All these statements were welcomed by the international community, "he said.
According to him, "some" PACE members simply took advantage of the circumstances to launch a campaign against him.
"This campaign was, of course, conducted by the Ukrainian delegation, because of national interests towards Russia, as well as socialists and extreme leftists, because of political and therefore party reasons, in particular for simple pleasure, in order to destroy the president," said Agamunt.
"Politically, the Ukrainian deputies with their simplistic slogans, as well as socialists and extreme leftists with their own hidden program, saw an excellent opportunity to attack me, after my initiatives for dialogue, to weaken me and take revenge," he said.
In his statement, Agramunt also said that the new rules adopted by the PACE regarding the procedure for his resignation are "illegal and dishonest".
