The adoption of the “Azov package of sanctions” should become the next step in the counteracting the Russian aggression as President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko reported on Facebook commenting his visit to Brussels.

“The important result – the European Council has made a political decision on the extension of the sectoral sanctions against the Russian aggressor for the total disregard for the Minsk Agreements. It is possible to keep the unity and solidarity of the EU in the counteracting the Russian aggression against Ukraine by the provision of the sanctions pressure on Kremlin during almost five years,” the president wrote.

Poroshenko reported that it was possible to provide the decision of the European Council for the support of Ukraine due to the aggressive actions of the Russian side in the region of Azov and Kerch waters thanks to the two days negotiations.

“This decision and held discussion between the EU leaders create a good basis for the process of the development of new sanctions to fairly and strictly punish the act of aggression of Russia against Ukraine.”

Poroshenko also thanked the EU for the beginning of the program of the social and economic support of the Azov regions to minimize negative consequences of the blockade of the Ukrainian ports by Russia.

Earlier Poroshenko stated that NATO will provide regional security in the Sea of Azov.
