Ukrainian official urges Portugal to increase pressure on Russia in terms of release of political prisoners

Currently, there are 127 Ukrainian citizens who stay in captivity of Russia-backed militants in the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Iryna Gerashchenko, the vice speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament and the country’s envoy in the Minsk talks group, said that during today’s negotiations with Portuguese diplomats.

Gerashchenko met with Inna Ohnivets, Ukraine’s Ambassador in Portugal and Francisco Antonio Duarte Lopes, Director General for Foreign Affairs Department of Portuguese Foreign Ministry.

‘I told our Portuguese colleague about our efforts to release political prisoners and prisoners of war; currently, there are 127 of them. I urged Portugal to increase pressure on Russia in terms of release of political prisoners,’ Gerashchenko said.

The official thanked the Portuguese side for the constant support of Ukraine in terms of visa free regime implementation.
