On Wednesday night, November 4, in front of the building 112 Ukraine TV channel, some unidentified individuals did a visual inspection of the area around the administrative building where the TV channel's office is located and studied the operative conditions, which may indicate a brewing provocation against the broadcaster.
CCTV cameras recorded that on November 4, around midnight, five people, who arrived at the TV channel building in two cars, thoroughly examined the perimeter around the office center. According to our information, all those who arrived are members of the far-right organization Unknown Patriot. Earlier, members of this nationalist group attacked a journalist of NewsOne TV channel.
Among the “scouts” CCTV cameras showed a person who resembles Serhiy Karhorodsky. Previously, he was a rifleman in the OUN Battalion (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists), fought in a war and is skilled in handling firearms.
112 Ukraine once again appeals to the security agencies of the country with a demand to take preventive measures, to ensure the safety of the media and to enable journalists to carry out their duties peacefully and without danger to their health.
In July 2019, the building of 112 Ukraine TV channel was fired from a grenade launcher. That attack has not yet been investigated, although it was committed in the center of the capital, threatening the lives of dozens of people. Even before the shelling, some 112 Ukraine employees had received threatening messages, which were ignored by law enforcement officers.
These are unacceptable acts of intimidation that can have serious consequences. The impunity of radical organizations in Ukraine pushes them to be more and more aggressive. Law enforcement bodies are obliged to protect Ukrainians and fight crime.
Recently, the Chairman of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine Serhiy Tomilenko said that there are cases of physical aggression against journalists in Ukraine every 5 days. “And, accordingly, this high level of physical aggression, harassment in social networks, intolerance, which many public figures demonstrate, all this leads to a toxic atmosphere in which journalists work,” Tomilenko noted.
We are firmly convinced that such a situation is unacceptable in a democratic state such as Ukraine.
The owner of 112 Ukraine TV channel Taras Kozak reminds that European institutions and diplomatic institutions have repeatedly demanded that the Ukrainian authorities protect freedom of speech in Ukraine.
“The Ukrainian authorities are obliged to take up their direct responsibilities and protect the freedom of speech instead of oppressing it. Firstly, it concerns the law enforcement bodies that should prevent violent intentions of the far-rights,” Kozak stated.
112 Ukraine TV channel is the leader of the news broadcasting in the country and is one of the ten best-rated Ukrainian TV channels. The air of the channel is equally open to representatives of different political forces, government bodies, public figures and experts, regardless of their political preferences. It is quite natural that the guests of our broadcast are also people who criticize the current government, in particular, point out the insufficient efforts in establishing peace and return of Ukrainian prisoners, mistakes in the implementation of Ukraine's foreign policy, failure of the authorities to fulfill their election promises, an increase in the level of corruption and freedom of speech.
However, it is what democracy is, when everyone is free to express their opinion. Now freedom of speech in Ukraine is under threat. And this violence must end.
