The investigation of the shootout in Kniyazhychi, during which five law enforcement officers were killed, went on a new way. To be more precise, it came back to the original version, for months rejected by the Interior Ministry - Police were involved in the robbery of luxury homes.
Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said that the house near which there was a skirmish was robbed by the police officers. "We now have evidence that the house was robbed twice: once by robbers, and once again by the law enforcement bodies", he said.
Even on December 4, 2016, that night when the shooting occurred, the locals, journalists and former employees of the Interior Ministry admitted that there was a gang of robbers from the police in Kniazhychi. According to one of the early versions, the shootings occurred due to the fact that the State Guard officers detained two police officers, who allegedly robbed a house, and policemen "came to rescue their people". There was also a version that the police-robbers were detained by State Guard Service, and law enforcement officers have just made a security sweep.
However, the only thing that is known for sure today – there are five dead. Two members of the State Guard, two members of police intelligence and one law enforcement officer were killed. The State Guard and police officers were shot directly in the marked State Guard Officers’ car.
It is worth noting that MP, Advisor to Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko was the first to comment the tragedy in Kniazhychi. He said that the police intelligence officers tracked down the thieves in the house, on which they had operational information, but the alarm went off in the house next door, and State Guard staff arrived, detained intelligence officers and law enforcement officers thought the bandits captured police officers and they should be rescued. "A mess" began, which ended with five dead police officers.
Ministry of Internal Affairs called this case a "confusion", "the lack of coordination between departments", "mistakes and shortcomings in the planning of the operation”. Versions of the likelihood that police the houses were roughly swept aside: "This is sheer stupidity. Some woman said that the police themselves robbed the house and State Guard Service came after that... Once again I can tell you exactly that law enforcement officers were sure that intelligence policemen are in trouble and captured by bandits, therefore they were ordered to storm further. Then the mess started at night", Gerashchenko said. National PoliceDeputy Head Vadym Trokan also said that “police officers were not involved in the robberies; they participated in the special operation."
However, the police carried out only a service check, and a criminal case is headed by the Prosecutor General, who has admitted that the police did robbed luxury houses in Kniazhychi.
"There have been a number of investigative actions that allow us to talk about clarifying the suspicions of leaders of this operation... There was negligence, which led to very serious consequences, like death. After examinations it can be clarified that the case goes under Article 115 ("Murder")”, Lutsenko said.
To date, according to the results of the official investigation, Kyiv police Head Andriy Kryschenko and Kyiv Shevchenko District Police Office Head Herman Prystupa have been warned about incomplete official capacity. Also 7 officers were dismissed and 9 became subjects to disciplinary actions.
We will have to wait for the results of the investigation and hope that we will know the truth, no matter how unpleasant it may be and hope the perpetrators will suffer just punishment.
