Since 1945, Germany, like Japan, has been de facto an American protectorate. After the Americans crushed Germany with their bombings, obedient Germans habitually submitted to the force and were very grateful to the Yankees for saving them from the invasion of communism and allowing restoring their economic power. And forcing the Germans not to forget who they should thank for their present well-being and not to have unnecessary ambitions, the USA always kept the largest military contingent in Germany (60-70 thousand) and controlled the military budget of Germany, reducing it to a minimum.
In response to Germany's actual loss of foreign-policy sovereignty, the US pledged to ensure its security from the attack of the Soviet Union at the expense of the NATO bloc, which, in fact, is a bloc of the US.
However, after the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, Germany's security was no longer threatened by the USSR. On the contrary, the past 15-20 years have shown that the US has become a huge problem for the world, increasingly becoming a factor of international turmoil, instability, supporting everywhere, where possible, military conflicts, tension and uncertainty. After the disappearance of the Soviet camp, the United States lost the meaning of its ideological leadership in the Western world and all foreign policy activity of America, in fact, was reduced to the struggle for world resources and for maintaining the status of the dollar as the world reserve currency, which actions are guarantors of continuing living on credit, at the expense of the whole world. The US has become a dangerous empire, living beyond its means and using force and threats to maintain its status quo.
As a consequence of such an unseemly role for the United States over the past 15 years, many research centers have begun to record the widespread decline in the attractiveness of the United States as the hegemon in the eyes of the world. So, the latest data from the Pew Research Center stated, that negativity about the US appears among people not only in Europe, but also in the rest of the world:
- in Germany - 62%
- in the Netherlands - 59%
- in Spain - 60%
And 60% of the respondents in Europe already believe that the leader of the Western world is ... Angela Merkel. At the same time, 2/3 of all respondents from 37 countries of the world are extremely negative about Donald Trump's personality and politics.
All these trends in recent years have provided the basis for Germany to raise the issue of its release from the American protectorate. The process has started. At the last EU summit, Merkel said that Europe should worry about its own security and create unified armed forces, and actually all major political parties in Germany called on the country not to comply with Trump's demand to pay 2% of GDP to the NATO fund. In fact, this is a rebellion on the part of Germany! And this is not a rebellion against Trump. This is a rebellion against American hegemony and it is a challenge to the very foundations of US welfare.
The answer from America did not take long. The blow was struck at the most painful place, for the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. The upper chamber, the Senate, adopted a bill that imposes sanctions on any European companies that will participate in the Nord Stream -2 project. The pretext was chosen cynically ludicrous - allegedly Russia's interference in the US election campaign. And, in addition, Europeans were offered an alternative to Russian gas. What's this?! This is American liquefied gas! In fact, it is a reminder of who is the boss in the house, and a reminder to Germany to be obedient.
The issue of the emancipation of Germany from American patronage is now put on edge. There is no doubt that the US House of Representatives will also approve a law on new sanctions, and Congress will overcome Trump's veto if he decides to impose it. Then, if Germany and its partner Austria continue the construction of the "Nord Stream -2", this will mean that Germany started to spoil relations in the name of its new status in Europe and the world. The next six months will show this.
What does this mean for Ukraine? Nothing good. Because Germany will be able to free itself from the US, only by relying on Russia's help. Some time ago Germany's influential business association turned to Merkel with a proposal for a phased lifting of sanctions from Russia, and the Mercedes-Benz concern recently launched a new project in Russia costs 250 million euros. So here it is, the Russian isolation from Germany! This all means that, in relation to Ukraine, Germany will take a passive-neutral or even a tough stance – it does not need an ally of the United States near its borders!
The German-Russian partnership is the worst dream of the United States, and to avoid it, they will try almost everything. If there is a real prospect for such an alliance, Ukraine will immediately receive lethal weapons. Moreover, our country will be persistently advised to apply it. Geopolitics is a cynical thing.
