Lviv Jewish community is concerned by the increasing tendency of anti-Semitic insults of the last months. The community published an open letter on their official Facebook page. The series of events consists of:
- Vandalic violence near the building of the Sholem Aleichem jewish community on 3 Vuhilna str., when the informational plates were broken;
- anti-Semitic written messages on the territory of the Space of Synagogues memorial complex on Arsenalna square;
- anti-Semitic written messages with direct threat to the jews on Sholem Aleichem street;
- unprecedented arson attempt of the active synagogue on 4 Mikhnovskyh street.
Jewish community is surprised by insufficient official response of the city and regional council to the rising tide of anti-Semitic insults, specifically the response to the latest events on Sholem Aleichem street and Mikhnovskyh street, as well as the position towards the tragic events of June 30 – July 20 in 1941.
The absence of the preventive actions by Police and the Security Service of Ukraine in order to avoid provocations, not bringing the provocateurs to responsibility that gives them free rein to continue committing illegal acts in future.
We are convinced that such a reaction by the authorities and law enforcement bodies, the attitude of the authorities towards all the mentioned above, enforces the sense of impunity and lawlessness for those whose aim, as we believe, is further aggravation of the interethnic relations and the destabilizing of the situation in the city with the use of the "jewish map".
The actions of the anti-jew elements are anti-Ukrainian actions, attempts to create a negative image of Ukrainian-Jewish relations. We protest against such kind of actions.
We hope that the respective authorities take measures to stop the growing wave of xenophobia in favor of Lviv to get back the status of the tolerant city.
