The Ukrainian government acquired 100 percent of the shares of PrivatBank, the biggest Ukrainian bank, according to the late Sunday announcement on the official website of the Cabinet of Ministers.

After the Cabinet of Ministers approved a request from the National Bank of Ukraine to place the country’s largest deposit holder under temporary administration.

The Head of the National Bank of Ukraine took part in the meeting of the government together with the Finance Minister Oleksandr Danyliuk who reported that the private stake holders of the Privatbank approached the government with the offer that the state becomes the sole owner of the bank in the interests of its clients.

The transition period starts on December 19.
