The current poverty rate in Ukraine exceeds 50%. This was announced by Ella Libanova, the director of the Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, LIGA.net reports.
"According to the first half of 2020 (this is the latest data from the State Statistics Service on income and consumption that we monitor), the poverty rate amounts to 51%. Even probably higher at this point," said Libanova.
The director of the Institute of Demography noted that the calculation of the poverty rate was conducted by taking into account the subsistence minimum.
As we reported earlier, the UN expects Ukraine to face the worst recession since 2010 (due to the pandemic of Covid-19).
"More than 80 percent of households and at least one family member in more than 40 percent of families lost his /her job. Though there is no separate data from Ukraine's East yet, chances are the social and economic consequences of this decline because of the conflict in the region will be devastating," reads the message.
