The state enterprise “Makarov Southern machine-building plant” (commonly referred to as “Yuzhmash”), one of Ukraine’s leading producers of rocket and space equipment, is developing its industrial cooperation in the area of rocket engine manufacturing with countries of South East Asia, particularly, South Korea and India.
Today “Yuzhmash” is managing the procurement of the agreements concluded in 2016 with Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and is preparing to expand the partnership.
“Our cooperation with KARI consists of two main areas: one is manufacturing of pump turbines and model valves for the RD-8 engine, as well as preparation of spherical tanks with 130- and 25-liter capacities. In 2017. Another agreement on spherical tank manufacturing was signed in 2017. The experience of successful cooperation led to our South Korean partners willing to expand this cooperation. Today we are preparing another agreement for the manufacturing of a rocket engine tank, as well as a contract for the manufacturing of elements of a liquid rocket engine for the South Korean rocket engine KSLV-II ”, a source among the top management of the enterprise said, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
Also, the source added that Yuzhmash is involved in a rocket project with the Indian organization of space studies ISRO. “We entered into an agreement with ISRO to carry out fire tests of Indian liquid rocket engines at the Yuzhmash testing grounds throughout 2019. The first stage of the agreement has been successfully completed.
The source claimed the expanding cooperation in the area of manufacturing space rockets with countries of South East Asia is considered one of the areas of diversification of production as a result of the disrupted traditional cooperation with Russia.
Yuzhmash is one of the leading space engine producers in Ukraine, known globally as a producer of rocket engines and satellites used for civilian, scientific and military use. As a result of the traditional cooperation with Russia being disrupted, in the last three years the company’s production capacity has halved and is now almost at a standstill.
Under its agreement with NASA, Yuzhmash is currently manufacturing the first stage of a new medium class rocket Antares for equipment delivery to the International Space Station. The government of Ukraine is in talks with the US government regarding possible cooperation in the area of rocket production in a project to design rocket engines that will replace the Russian RD-180 for the new generation of U.S. Air Force rocket engines.
