Not the best option for Ukraine is being discussed at today's gas transit talks - the transit of only 30 billion cubic meters of gas. This is better than no transit but unprofitable for the operator of the Gas Transportation System of Ukraine. It was reported by ZN.UA citing sources.
"On Friday, according to ZN.UA sources, representatives of gas companies of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, as well as the Gas Transportation System’s operator, joined the talks. However, the pessimistic option is still being discussed - the transit of up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas through the Gas Transportation System of Ukraine. It will be enough for Gazprom to close all its contracts next year," the material informs.
Ukraine's position is to sign a 10-year contract under European legislation with a mandatory transit volume of 60 billion cubic meters per year. Another 30 billion cubic meters are reserved in view of the possible increase in gas demand in Europe.
But that is not in Gazprom’s plans, which intends to use the full capacity of Nord Stream-2, as well as the gas line through Turkey as fast as possible. Such Gazprom’s contract will be a burden if its gas transit plans are implemented quickly, the newspaper emphasizes.
"We are ready to work with Ukraine on the transit of our gas to Europe and on its supply to Ukraine. Moreover, at the prices below those at which Ukraine receives Russian gas, but as if by a reverse from Europe ... But we were talking that if we supply it directly, we can reduce the price by 25%," Putin said.
