The parliament committee on the issues of fiscal policy and bank activity has recommended that the Ukrainian Parliament fire Valeriya Gontaryeva from the position of the Head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) and officially appoint Yakiv Smoliy, who is now fulfilling the duties. This was informed by Deputy Head of the committee Mykhailo Dovbenko, as Interfax-Ukraine informs.
“The vote was positive: (we) supported the project of the submission made by the President of Ukraine, as to the positive vote for Yakiv Smoliy in the session hall,” Dovbenko said.
Valeriya Gontareva submitted her resignation on April 10, 2017. On May 11, 2017, while still not formally dismissed, she left the bank and Deputy Governor Yakiv Smoliy took over her duties. Since then, Smoliy had been serving as the Acting Head of the NBU.
On Jan. 18, it became known that President Poroshenko made a submission to the Parliament on firing Gontareva and appointing Smoliy.
