Parliament passes bill “on currency” as basis

The Verkhovna Rada passed the president’s bill on currency #8152 in the first reading through a shortened procedure, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

The decision was backed by the support of 253 lawmakers, while the required minimum is 226 votes.

While presenting the bill to the Rada, the President’s representative in the state parliament Iryna Lutsenko (member of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc), the president identifies the bill as an urgent measure to be taken.

On 10 August, the National Bank of Ukraine published a draft of the bill “on currency” for public discussion. The bill is expected to become the single legal act that sets the procedure for the organization of currency regulation and the conduct of currency monitoring within the country.

As of right now, the main legal act regulating the Ukrainian currency market is the decree by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “On the currency regulation and currency control system” dated 1993.

An alternative bill “On currency” was also submitted to the Ukrainian parliament in April of the current year.
