German Chancellor Angela Merkel intends to offer the European Union to introduce new sanctions against Russia because of the aggravation of the situation in Syria. It is reported by the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung in the issue, which will be released on Sunday, October 16, DW reports.
New sanctions issue will be raised at the European Council on 20-21 October. However, it will be difficult to agree on further sanctions with the coalition partners in the Bundestag, and then at the European level.
It is noted that US President Barack Obama promised Merkel his support if Europe will unite in its response to imposing sanctions in a telephone conversation. Further sanctions may relate to the Russian aviation industry, which is important for the country's defense ministry.
The US accuses Russia of attacking a United Nations humanitarian convoy in Syria, which killed at least 20 people. Two Russian Su-24 aircraft were recorded in the airspace over Aleppo.
