The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine considers as a necessity to invest in the construction and renovation of runways in regional airports, the head of the institution Volodymyr Omelyan stated on the air of Channel Five, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
“Numerous airlines are willing to launch flights to and from Ukrainian regional airports, but there are no infrastructural conditions for them to do so. The airports have no runways, there are no terminals that would speed up the service, which is one of the most important matters for low-cost airlines. This means we need to invest in the regional runways as the state in order to create a highly competitive market and industry for the state as well,” Omelyan said.
The minister said the development of such airports would in turn ensure a quick return on investment.
Earlier, the infrastructure minister claimed that the reconstruction of the Odesa airport is expected to be completed next year. The institution also intends to allocate $45 million for the reconstruction of the Odesa airport runway.
According to the ministry, the construction of a new runway will allow the airport to handle heavier aircraft such as Boeing-767, potentially increasing the passenger traffic.
