Ukraine’s power sector is the most corrupted division of the entire Ukrainian economy. The NABU, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine reported that, having released the results of their research on the current situation in this area, Interfax news agency reports.
"Eighteen months of NABU's investigation showed that corruption in the energy sector is the largest among all economic sectors both due to the uniqueness of enterprises and due to the large number of persons implicated in the corruption scams and the amount of losses. According to tentative estimates, the total loss from crimes linked to operations of enterprises in the energy sector is UAH 11.18 billion," the press service of the anti-corruption agency said.
The law enforcers took the investigation into embezzlement of oil at public joint-stock company Ukrnafta for over UAH 7 billion as an example. "The essence of the corruption scam used at the enterprise in 2015 was to sell oil to concrete companies in advance and these companies "forgot" to pay for it," the NABU said.
The agency also pointed out that ‘some court rulings that would allow returning almost UAH 90 million to state-owned enterprises of the energy sector are at the stage of enforcement’.
