At its meeting on Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to allocate UAH 253 million ($9.5 million) to the construction of a runway strip at the Odesa international airport, the ministry wrote on its official website citing the minister, Volodymyr Omelyan, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
"The ministry has initiated the allocation of additional funds to the works at the Odesa airport. In May of this year, I inspected the construction process, in 2019, I am sure, the renovated airport will allow Odesa to become a southern hub of Ukraine. For a third year in a row now, the circa 30% growth of air transportation requires modernization of our airports, and we are working on it”, - the official said.
The institution points out that the construction of the new runway strip will allow to accommodate heavier types of aircraft including Boeing 767, which could lead to a two-fold increase in passenger flow. The runway capacity of the new strip will be two times greater than that of the current one.
As part of the project, light signaling, radio navigation and meteorological equipment for a certified approach to landing under the III-A category (the current runway is certified under the I category).
As reported earlier, the infrastructure ministry has forecast the completion of the runway strip reconstruction at the Odesa international airport in 2019.
In April 2018, the press service of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office informed that the Solomensky district court had transferred the real estate of the Odesa airport, as well as a 75% stake in the company owning the facility to be managed by the National Agency of Ukraine on detection, search and management of assets.
The aforementioned actions were performed as part of an investigation withing criminal proceedings into facts of abuse of power by officials at the Odesa city council and OOO Odesa airport Development (Section 3 of Article 28, Section 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
