OSCE SMM in Ukraine

The work of the OSCE mission continues to be blocked in occupied Donetsk. Particularly, gatherings are held under the hotel where the observers live as the OSCE SMM report states.

“The mass gatherings continue in front of the hotel where the Mission members live in occupied Donetsk. On October 18, the patrols did not leave the hotel and did not come to it," the report says.

Observers also said that a mass gathering with 20 to 60 people (of different gender and age) continued around the hotel, and the protesters played very loud music on the loudspeaker. Moreover, protesters placed wooden pallets at the entrance to the hotel, which could obstruct transport access to the hotel entrance.

“On several occasions during the reporting period, observers spotted various vehicles blocking access to the parking lot behind the hotel, as well as the presence of members of the armed formations (some of whom were apparently armed) around the hotel,” the OSCE added.

As we reported, the Organization for Security and Cooperation on Europe suspended its monitoring mission in eastern Ukraine following protests near its headquarters in separatist-controlled Donetsk. About 200 pro-Russian protesters confronted OSCE monitors on Saturday to demand the release of a rebel officer captured by the Ukrainian military last week.

However, the OSCE continues its monitoring mission in the part of the Luhansk region not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, despite the termination of work in occupied Donetsk.
