The United States believe that in order to hold elections in Donbas, the UN mission must be deployed throughout the region, at the same time, the deployment can begin with a line of demarcation. This was stated by the US State Department's special representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker on January 29 in a telephone briefing in Brussels, TASS reports.
"The United States want the mandate of the UN mission to assume more than protection," he said. "The United States want the mission's deployment zone to be on the entire territory of the conflict, including on the border with the Russian Federation."
At the same time, the he suggested that "the deployment of the UN mission can begin with a line of demarcation."
He also noted that the timing of the possible deployment of the mission is not defined. "It is not yet clear when this will happen," he said.
Volker stressed that at the first stage it is necessary "to achieve a long-term ceasefire."
As it was reportee earlier the draft resolution of Russia, which provides for the deployment of peacekeepers in Donbas only along the line of conflict, is unacceptable for the United States and the United Nations, since it will not guarantee security, but will deepen the conflict. Special Representative of the United States for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated this.
