Leonid Kravchuk, the first President of Ukraine commented upon the issues of the visa-free regime with EU and the plans to implement visa regime with Russia in the on-air of 112 Ukraine

‘If it was so easy to solve the problems that formed during ages and make the decision that solves everything then life would be extremely easy and people would deal with problems by one decision. Unfortunately, it is not so. The visa-free regime has great importance for Ukraine. It is the authority, the desire of people, their striving and the recognition of Ukraine as the European civilized country. It is the main point. But to pry away from Russia is the great inner transformations of the person that were formed during centuries. Such issues as faith, national, everyday and family are intercrossed.  For example, the husband is Ukrainian and the wife is Russian. Such marriages were pretty widespread in Soviet times. Every year 1 million of Russians moved to Ukraine and not less than 900 thousand of Ukrainians left the country. They moved for work or dwelling. And it remained. Let’s look at Eastern, Western and Central Ukraine. There are different faith, national features and political preferences.  Consequently, I think that it is wrong to treat this problem simplistically. It is very simple and clear but extremely wrong. The visa-free regime is very important but to pull away from Russia is slightly another issue’, Kravchuk thinks.

The first president also expressed the opinion that the implementation of visa regime with Russia is untimely.

‘You know, the issue of Russia is a war. All decisions that are discussed or made by theParliament. all of them are made through the prism of war, annexation, murders aggression, including the informational aggression that was reduced to absurdity by Russia. We need to understand people who put forth the proposals. If we talk about my opinion, I think that it is not timely. It is impossible that it is not necessary at all; we should wait to see the possibilities to build the relations, including Russia. Then we should make the decision. At the moment there are many people, especially from the Eastern and Central part of Ukraine who work in Russia and it will be really bad for them’, he added.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine can make the decision to implement the visa regime with Russia. The political consultations take place at the moment. Earlier, Pavlo Klimkin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine claimed, that the Ministry is ready to implement such decision when it will be made.
