Verkhovna Rada published in the Voice of Ukraine a decision condemning sentence of Moscow City Court in the case of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko imprisoned in Russia. The document came into force on June 7, on the day of its adoption.
By adopting the resolution, Ukrainian Parliament has condemned illegal verdict in the case of Roman Sushchenko and appealed to the parliaments of foreign states, parliamentary assemblies of international organizations, world leaders and the international community in this regard.
In the appeal, Verkhovna Rada expressed strong protest in connection with the unlawful sentence of Roman Sushchenko. Ukrainian MPs have stated that "the Moscow City Court verdict in this case is based on outright fabricated charges, falsifying evidence and is another indication of the absence of justice in Russian Federation and the continuation of politically motivated persecution of citizens of Ukraine."
As it was reported earlier, Verkhovna Rada passed the document, in which it turned to the international partners due to the illegal verdict in the case of the political prisoner.
The Verkhovna Rada demanded that Russia immediately stop the deliberate violation of human rights and freedoms, cancel the illegal decision in the case of Roman Sushchenko and see to it that he returns to Ukraine without impediment.
Roman Sushchenko, the Ukrainian reporter, was detained in Moscow in September 2016. The Russian prosecutors charged him with espionage in favor of the Ukrainian military intelligence. They also accused him of an attempt to clear up the possibility of a new attack on Mariupol by the “DNR” terrorists. Recently, the Russian court sentenced him to 12 years in the high-security penal colony.
