According to him, the issue at hand is the possible fabrication by Moscow of reasons to accuse Ukraine of "preparing an imminent attack on Russian forces in eastern Ukraine."

"Our intelligence community has gathered information... that Russia is laying the groundwork to be able to fabricate a pretext for an invasion, including through sabotage and information operations, accusing Ukraine of preparing an attack on Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. We saw that in 2014. They're preparing that scenario again. And we will have, the administration will have additional information that we see this as a potential occasion and will share with the press over the next 24 hours," Sullivan said.

The US presidential adviser once again stressed that the US is in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but is ready to respond if Russian aggression continues.

As we reported, the US has made a deal with the EU to punish Russia for possible aggression against Ukraine. The respective set of sanctions may differ but they will still deal considerable damage.
