According to the latest data from the United Nations, almost 9.5 thousand people were killed during the ongoing armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. More than 20,000 were injured. Ivan Simonovic, UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights said this during his speech in Geneva (ORF). According to him, most of the civilians were killed during chaotic attacks on residential quarters.
Simonovic admitted that thanks to the negotiations about ceasefire, the monthly average number of victims somewhat decreased since September last year. On the other hand, the ceasefire has been violated numerous times. ‘The situation in Ukraine is unpredictable’, the official reiterated, adding that the threat of escalation of the conflict may have even more serious consequences for the civilians and the entire region.
