The SBU, Ukraine’s Security Service, have detained a contract soldier of the Ukrainian Army. It turned out that since June 2014, he served with one of illegal armed units of the self-styled ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’ and took part in the combat actions in Ilovaisk, Snizhne and Dmytrivka, Donetsk region. In 2016, he joined the Ukrainian Army.
‘The criminal had fighting experience received during the military mission in Afghanistan back in the 1980s; in 2014, he joined Russian-backed militants under the influence of the Russian propaganda. As an artillery man, he took part in the battles near Ilovaisk, Snizhne and Dmytrivka; he got wounded in June 2014. As he cured and left the hospital, he got back to his force. He trained under command of the Russian military supervisors (aliases Ural and Terek). He also took part in the 2015 fights near Debaltsevo’, the SBU reports.
The Security Service also found out that the criminal moved to Russia to his sister in spring 2015, as he became disillusioned with the idea of the so-called ‘Novorossia’ (the Russian-occupied areas of Ukrainian Donbas, - 112 International). To enter the Russian territory, he used the identification card signed by Strelkov, one of the-then leaders of the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’.
‘Due to the financial woes, he decided to sign a contract with Ukrainian Armed Forces in spring 2016. He was directed to one of the units that participate in the Donbas conflict, and then officers of the Security Service detained him,’ the report says.
The detained individual has been informed about suspicion in the crime, namely the organization of a terrorist group; the investigation into his case continues.
