The decrease of Russia's military presence on the border with Ukraine leads to a decrease in the current tensions between Kyiv and Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelensky left his comment on the withdrawal of Russian troops on his Twitter account.
"Ukraine is always staying sharp but it welcomes any steps towards cutting the military presence and de-escalation of the situation in Donbas. Ukraine longs for peace. Thanks to international partners for their support", Zelensky said.
Earlier on April 22, head of the Russian Defense Ministry Sergei Shoigu charged the General Staff, commanders of military districts, and Airborne Forces to begin the withdrawal from Ukraine's borders back to their respective bases. Shoigu called the relocation of the majority of the Russian troops to the southern borders of Russia an ‘unexpected’ check.
“I believe that goals of the unexpected check were completely reached. The troops showed the possibility to provide reliable protection of the country. Due to this, I made a decision to finish verification activities in Southern and Western military districts,” Shoigu said.
