Office of Prosecutor General of Ukraine has been looking into criminal proceedings against 250 foreign citizens who fought on the side of Russian militants in Donbas. Gyunduz Mamedov, the Deputy Prosecutor General said so in an interview with ZN.UA.
"We have criminal proceedings registered on the facts of participation of 250 mercenaries from 31 countries. The geography is wide: Europe, Asia, America. Among the latest cases is the fact of recruitment, funding, training of mercenaries by a Finnish citizen; they were supposed to participate in the conflict within the illegal armed formations of the Russian Federation. He performed his part of the action in his country: he recruited people, collected money, military equipment, covered expenses for tickets, passports, and visas. He was awarded the medal "For returning Crimea", Mamedov said.
According to him, most of these foreigners serve as snipers, machine gunners, reconnaissance force members, and artillery crew members. They serve in irregular formations, such as Vostok, Prizrak, Oplot, Pyatnashka, and others. Some of them became commanders of divisions and companies of these units.
"It matters little who committed crimes; in this regard, a war criminal has no origin. I would insist on the irrevocable punishment, and it will come true. Such tough crimes as war crimes have no limitations periods", Mamedov said.
