German Foreign Minister and the OSCE Chairman in Europe Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his confidence that the exchange of prisoners in the Donbas region can take place before Christmas.

He stated this in an interview with German media group Funke, DW reports.

German Foreign Minister also noted the stagnation in the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

"Parties to the conflict are literally buried in their own trenches", - Steinmeier said. Also he mentioned the continuous violations of the ceasefire state and almost no progress in addressing the political issues.

The situation does not allow calling the implementation of the Minsk agreements satisfactory, moreover to raise the issue of the lifting of sanctions against Russia, Steinmeier stressed.

"When there will be made the visible steps in the implementation of the Minsk agreements, then we will consider the relevant developments in relation to the sanctions", the Head of the German Foreign Ministry said.
