Residents of Slovyansk, Donetsk region, celebrated the anniversary of liberation of their town from pro-Kremlin militants.  Three years ago, on July 5, 2014, the Ukrainian army liberated Slovyansk, regaining control over it after the enemy had captured the town in April 2014.

On Wednesday, the local police operated in heavy security mode so as to avoid any provocations.

Slovyansk was captured by pro-Russian separatists in spring 2014; that actually launched the whole conflict between Ukrainian troops and the Kremlin-backed mercenaries in Donbas. As Ukrainian troops nearly encircled the town in early July 2014, the enemy retreated, and the civilians finally got the necessary humanitarian assistance.  Re-taking Slovyansk became one of the early victories of the Ukrainian forces in this ongoing conflict.
