Ukrainian army warns there is a threat of chemical pollution of Siversky Donets river (Donetsk region), the only source of drinkable water for the entire conflict zone.

According to Anatoliy Petrenko, leader of the Ukrainian side of the Joint Control and Coordination Centre in Donbas, Russia-backed militants don’t let engineer squads to conduct repair works in Maryinka and Avdiivka.

‘The Russian troops didn’t reply to our request to provide necessary security conditions in the area of carbolic acid factory in Novhorodske. Since the Ukrainian side has no guarantees of security of repair works there, we can’t dispose of chemical waste from the factory in good time; over half a million cubic meters of waste were accumulated there over a short period. If the factory suffers damage – and it lies between the firing positions – there could be a leak of carbolic acid, formalin and sulfuric acid. Leaking of such substances into Kryvyi Torets River will also pollute Siversky Donets, the largest river in this area and the only source of drinkable water for residents of Donbas’, Petrenko said.

The OSCE previosuly warned that there is a high threat of chemical pollution in the area of Novhorodske.
