The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has identified and detained a Russian intelligence agent who was reporting on Ukrainian forces and equipment in the Donbas conflict area. This was reported by the press service of the SBU.
"Counterintelligence officers of the Security Service of Ukraine found and detained an agent of the Chief Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation," the statement said.
It is reported that a citizen of a foreign state, temporarily residing in one of the regions of Ukraine, on the instructions of the secret service of the aggressor country sometimes went to Donbas conflict area to collect intelligence.
The Russian "curators" were interested in information about the latest models of weapons and military equipment in Joint Forces Operation area, the location, the number of personnel of the Armed Forces, etc.
The man was detained while passing military information to a representative of the Russian special services via electronic communication channels.
He has pressed charges under Part 1 of Art. 258-3 (Participation in the activities of a terrorist organization) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court ruled to put him into custody.
He could face charges for espionage.
Earlier it was reported that several officials and law enforcement officers in Kherson region worked as informants of Russia's intelligence network.
