The year 2017 was the toughest in the whole period of the conflict in Donbas, so the sanctions against the Russian Federation should remain in force. This was reported by the US special representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker in an interview with La Stampa.
"The year that ends is the toughest since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. The weapons are supplied in Kyiv to help defend themselves and also send a signal to the attackers. In this context it is absolutely necessary that the sanctions imposed on Russia remain in force. Moscow reacts, trying to break the unity of Western countries, and therefore tries to influence the upcoming Italian elections," he said.
Note that now the militants are trying to disrupt the New Year armistice, which began operating on December 23. The parties agreed on it during the meeting of the Tripartite Contact Group in Minsk on December 20. At the same time, the sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Minsk agreements. Later the headquarters of the conflict reported that the militants violated this truce, firing Ukrainian positions on the Svitlodarska arc.
