The number of Ukrainian citizens illegally held in detention by Donbas militants has grown, and currently, it’s 162. Iryna Gerashchenko, the First Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament and the envoy in the humanitarian subdivision of the Minsk talks group said that at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

‘The number of hostages has been growing – at the cost of detained pro-Ukrainian citizens who chose to stay in the occupied territory; they take them under trumped-up charges.  Most of these are civilians, military men; there are men and women, there are three volunteers and a reporter. These are the people whose families turned to the SBU for help,’ Gerashchenko said.  

According to her, the Ukrainian side confirmed the whereabouts of 94 people; however, militants confirmed these of a smaller number. ‘We hope for good news by the end of the year,’ the Ukrainian official said.
