Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said the Russian Federation accuses Ukrainian far-right Igor Mazur, who was detained in Poland, of fighting against Russian troops in Chechnya. This country once again uses Interpol’s tools for the political persecution of Ukrainian citizens, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports.

"The Russian Federation accuses our citizen of allegedly participating in military clashes with federal forces on the territory of Chechnya in 1994-2000. As a result, several Russian servicemen were killed and seriously injured," Arsen Avakov said.

He believes that Russia violates articles 2 and 3 of the Interpol Charter, which prohibit unjustified persecution, as well as interference in military, political, religious and racial affairs. The reason for the detention was the document published by the Russian Federation in the Interpol information system on the search for Mazur with a view to his arrest and subsequent extradition to Russia.

In this regard, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine drew the attention of the Interpol General Secretariat to another attempt by the Russian Federation to illegally use Interpol channels and tools for politically motivated prosecutions of Ukrainian citizens.

Avakov added that the Ministry of Internal Affairs hopes for a quick, objective and legal consideration of the case against Mazur, which was completely fabricated to please the Kremlin.

The deputy chairman of the UNA-UNSO (Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People's Self-Defence) Ukrainian far-right organization, Igor Mazur was detained in Poland. The detention was conducted at the request of Russia. The former MP Igor Mosiychuk reported this on Facebook.

"They just confirmed to me that a participant in our national liberation war in the east, a well-known far-right Igor Mazur was detained on the territory of Poland in Warsaw, at the request of the Russian Federation," Mosiychuk stated.

Polish border guards detained Mazur on the Polish side of the Dorohusk checkpoint.

“He is not allowed to see the Ukrainian consul and is not provided with a lawyer. On Monday, the issue of taking Igor into custody for extradition to Russia will be decided,” said Andriy Mamalyga on Facebook.
