The US Department of Defense has information on the continued build-up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border as Pentagon spokesperson John F. Kirby stated.

“What we continue to see is added capability that President Putin continues to add, added military capability in the western part of his country and around Ukraine,” Kirby noted.

According to him, on December 6, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, during a meeting with the heads of key departments, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the head of the US European Command (EUCOM), Air Force General Daniel Walters, discussed the situation in Ukraine and western Russia.

According to Kirby, the Pentagon has not yet decided on any action. Moreover, it is necessary to wait for the results of the conversation between US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

“What I would point you to is the secretary's comments over the weekend when he was out at the Reagan National Defense Forum where, you know, he said and still believes that diplomacy and leadership can still make a difference here,” Kirby noted.

Recently, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to invade Ukraine. At the moment, it is not yet known whether he made a decision.

To clarify the situation around the growing tension near the Ukrainian border, Biden agreed on a dialogue with Putin.

The talks between US President Joe Biden and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will take place on the evening of December 7.
