The National Assembly, the lower chamber of the French Parliament, voted to keep effective the ongoing emergency rule in the country until early 2017 (RFI). Before voting for the respective bill, MPs held debates that finished well after the midnight. Initially, the bill’s authors offered to extend the rule for just three months; however, the Republicans insisted on further extension and the ruling Socialist Party supported them on the matter. During the debates, Prime Minister Manuel Valls stressed that France remains a target for terrorists because it is a symbol of secular state, and it wages war on militants in Syria and Iraq.
