The Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of Ukraine summarized the events from the beginning of the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine to the fifth anniversary of the aggression. The Ministry outlined that the consequences of the criminal deeds by the Kremlin authorities are unprecedented for post-war Europe. Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted this on its website.
“Five years ago Russia greatly violated the international law, because they began the occupation of Crimea. Although the illegal referendum and the Russian status of Crimea had not been authorized by the international society, the reluctance of the international organizations to counteract the daring act by the Russian forces allowed the Kremlin regime to continue the aggression and to occupy the half of the Donbas territories of Ukraine. November 25, Russia made an open act of aggression against Ukraine by attacking Ukrainian navy at the Kerch Strait and on the neutral territories of the Black Sea. The consequences of the aggression are tragic and unprecedented for post-war Europe”, - the report said.
According to the information, over 13,000 Ukrainian citizens were killed, 30,000 were wounded and 1.5 million were forced to become displaced people.
Furthermore, the Russian aggression caused the mass destruction of Donbas, usurpation of the Ukrainian possessions on the occupied territories of Crimea, the mass violation of the international and humanitarian law, political harassment and intimidation of the Ukrainian people in order to suppress any anti-occupational views and to speed up the militarization process of the occupied peninsula.
“With the help of the heroic deeds of the Ukrainian soldiers and increasing political and practical support of the international partners of Ukraine, Ukraine is still able to suppress the aggression”, - the report said.
In particular, a powerful international coalition has been created. It actively supports Ukraine, exacerbates pressure on Russia, demanding full de-occupation of Ukrainian territories raising the price of continuing aggression.
"All political prisoners and prisoners of war should be released immediately. This is a joint position of Ukraine and international partners. The further delay of Moscow with the fulfillment of this requirement must have absolutely certain consequences, including sanctions," the statement said.
It is noted that the termination of the aggression of the Russian Federation in Donbas should be based on the full-scale UN peacekeeping mission, whose mandate should cover the entire conflict zone.
"The international community supports Ukraine in Crimean question. This is evidenced by a number of UNGA resolutions, which give unequivocal assessments of Moscow’s policy, require Russia to observe international humanitarian law and de-occupy the peninsula, condemn the militarization of Crimea and adjacent parts of the Azov and Black Seas," it is added.
The Foreign Ministry also states that the unacceptability of Moscow’s actions for the international community is indicated by the fact that today the situation on the occupied territories is being discussed for the first time at the UN General Assembly with the participation of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
"We are grateful to our partners...Restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine is necessary not only to ensure the future of our people. This is a condition for restoring confidence in the European and world security system, which should be based on the unconditional respect of independent states to the norms of international law and tough response to its violators," the statement summarized.
