Disengagement in Zolote did not take place because of Ukrainian authorities. The Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life Party and MP Viktor Medvedchuk states this during the conversation with journalists at the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada.
Medvedchuk noted that it could be concluded that “the process of peaceful settlement and cessation of hostilities is failing at the moment.”
“If we analyze separately all these points, it means that Mr. Zelensky does not have a position on peaceful settlement. He does not have a political will to bring peace to the country and agree in Minsk format to hold Normandy format further, develop the idea of Steinmeier formula and move on to fulfilling all Minsk agreements,” Medvedchuk said.
The politician dwelled on the demand for liquidation of the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic:
“The liquidation of informal, unrecognized Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic is nothing; it’s just an attempt to disrupt the negotiation process. Just like when the question is raised about establishing control over the border between Russia and Ukraine. Yes, this must be done, and Ukraine’s interests are that such control should exist,” the politician said, noting that the Minsk agreements imply establishing control after the elections and giving special status of Donbas in the Constitution of Ukraine.
“It is all written and has to be implemented step by step according to Minsk agreements,” he said.
Medvedchuk reminded that there were three pilot projects of disengagement: Stanytsia Luhanska, Zolote and Petrivske, defined by the decision of Normandy format back in October 2016.
“The decision was made concerning one of these pilot projects: the forces were withdrawn from Stanytsia Luhanska, but in Zolote and Petrivske they were not withdrawn because of the Ukrainian side. How can Ukrainian side demand disengagement along the entire contact line, which is 412 km, if Ukraine was unable to disengage forces in two of the three pilot projects?” he noted.
According to Medvedchuk, this indicates that the official position of Kyiv is to block this process.
“I do not attribute this to Ukrainian delegation, because Ukrainian delegation could not act without the directives of Mr. Zelensky. This means that peace process was halted and to great regret, there is no political will of President of Ukraine Zelensky to establish peace,” he concluded.
