Residents of the occupied by "DNR" militants Horlivka on May 9 could observe a large flag of Ukraine in the sky over the city. It was launched from neighboring Svitlodarsk, as the Joint Operations Headquarters reported.
"Volunteers, joint forces operation soldiers, residents and schoolchildren of Svitlodarsk launched the National Ukrainian flag of 10X6 meters over the territory of the occupied Horlivka," the message says.
As you know, since April 2014, the militants of Donetsk region have occupied Horlivka.
As it was reported earlier, many mass events dedicated to Day of Victory over Nazism in WWII were held in Ukraine on May 9.
According to the police, around 1,5 thousand events were held in Kyiv. Around 390 thousand citizens participated in the events. 20,5 thousand police officers and National Guard servicemen were keeping the order in the state on May 9.
Ukraine was celebrating the end of WWII in a new way: for the first time our country distanced itself from the celebration of the Victory Day in the Soviet-style and organized official events devoted to the end of the war in Europe on May 8-9.
Later on, new names were attached to these dates on the legislative level. Thus, 8 May, according to the decree by president Petro Poroshenko dated 24 March 2015, became the Day of Memory and reconciliation, whereas 9 May, according to the decommunization laws that were approved by the Parliament of Ukraine in April of the same year, became the Day of victory over Nazism in WWII.
At the same time, the former date is a memorable day, while the latter is an official state holiday and day off.
