Russia has been capturing more and more Ukrainian citizens as prisoners, so that the Kremlin could blackmail the rest of the international society. Iryna Gerashchenko, Deputy Parliamentary Speaker and PACE representative, said this at the PACE session in Strasbourg that is now taking place.

‘Russia holds some people captive, and then it captures some more. There are 110 hostages on the occupied territory. Yevhen Panov was captured by the Russian special services in summer, and there’s no information regarding his whereabouts. Ilmi Umerov was subdued to Stalin-era repressive medicine. Roman Sushchenko was arrested in Moscow under the trumped-up charges with espionage. Why Russia has been doing this? To blackmail the international society and to strive for lifting of sanctions. The Russian authorities are involved in all war crimes against Ukraine. We stand for tougher international pressure on Russia and strengthening of sanctions,’ Gerashchenko said.
