A mercenary fighting for the self-styled Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) has been sentenced to eight and a half years in jail, following a ruling by the Slovyansk city court in the Donetsk region.

According to the regional prosecutor’s office, the militant, call sign "Old Man" was charged and judged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and found guilty of being a member of a terrorist organization and the illicit possession of firearms.

The government agency added that the unnamed 47-year-old joined the pro-Kremlin militants in May 2015.

‘They gave him a uniform, a gun and ammunition. He used to deliver artillery shells from Donetsk to (forward) firing positions in Zaitsevo, which allowed enemy troops to launch attacks on Ukrainian forces in the area,’ the prosecutor’s office said.

The militant was detained near the separatist-held city Horlivka in November 2015.
