Belarus announced the advisor of Ukrainian Embassy in Minsk Ihor Skvortsov persona non-grata due to the detention of the Ukrainian Radio's special correspondent Pavlo Sharoyko. This was reported on the website of Belarusian KGB.
The KGB also said that Sharoyko allegedly confirmed that "coordination of his intelligence activities" was carried out by Skvortsov, who was called in the Belarusian department an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and he acted allegedly under cover of the post of adviser to the embassy of Ukraine in Belarus.
"For activity incompatible with diplomatic status I. Skvortsov was declared person non-grata," the statement says.
As it was reported earlier Pavlo Sharoyko, a reporter for Ukrainian Radio, was detained in Belarus, as CEO of National Television Company of Ukraine Zurab Alasania wrote on Facebook.
He says the Embassy of Belarus evades the inquiries into the matter. “According to our unofficial information in Belarus, he faces the standard accusation for foreign reporters – espionage,” he wrote.
Vasyl Kyrylych, the Head of Department of Consular Support confirmed the information on the detention of Pavlo Sharoyko, the journalist of the Ukrainian radio. According to Kyrylych, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine assumes measures to protect the rights of the detained citizen of Ukraine. Ihor Kyzym, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Belarus added that the Embassy of Ukraine sent a note to the Foreign Ministry of Belarus.
The State Security Committee of Belarus has accused Ukrainian journalist Pavlo Sharoyko of espionage. This was reported on the website of the committee.
"Criminal case was brought against P. Sharoyko under article 358 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus ("espionage") and a decision was made to impose a preventive measure in the form of detention," the statement reads.
