The conditions for the holding of the elections in the uncontrolled territory of Donbas by current authority contradict Minsk Agreements as Chairman of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life Party Viktor Medvedchuk stated.
“These conditions directly contradict Minsk Agreements. The issue is not about the fact that the elections in the uncontrolled territory should take place on October 25, 2020 – they cannot take place, a priori, due to one simple reason: firstly, there is no law on the holding of the elections in the uncontrolled territory; secondly, there is no truce today and the conditions of Minsk Agreements are not fulfilled that should precede the holding of the elections. Because the other side accepted an approach about the abolishing of point 4 of the regulation of the Verkhovna Rada; it shows that it violates Minsk Agreements. It should be canceled to continue the talks within Minsk format. Otherwise, these talks are absolutely senseless,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the opposition politician underlined that there is enough time for the authority to enable the citizens of the controlled part of Donbas to vote at the local elections.
“It is proposed to make the amendments, at least, by Mr. Kachura; the offers of the Opposition Platform – For Life; we raised the issue that it is necessary to hold the elections during the campaign, October 25 – the issue is about the elections of Luhansk and Donetsk regional councils. It is the elections of 18 united territorial communities, where 500,00 citizens of Ukraine who live in Donbas deprived of their constitutional right. They are deprived of it illegally and criminally. It is the most important task that should be corrected and it can be corrected, despite the beginning of the election campaign. Concerning the uncontrolled territories – it is the issue of the future. It is tied with the fact that Minsk Agreements cannot be given up. But point 4 did it, in fact,” Medvedchuk said.
