Austria allocates $1,1 million for mine-clearing of Donbas

Austria is to allocate $1,1 million financial aid for the eastern regions of Ukraine, as Sebastian Kurz, Chancellor of Austria, said on October 3, Die Presse reported.

According to Kurz, the means will be sent to the Red Cross for the mine-clearing project and to other Austrian non-governmental organizations, which provide assistance for the population affected by Donbas war.

Reportedly, it would take 10-15 years to demine the territory of Donbas. The Minister of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs Vadym Chernysh estimated the process of mine clearing of this territory at around $800 million.

Reportedly, since the beginning of the year, the units of Ukraine's State Emergency Service have seized and destroyed 49,577 explosive items, including 646 aviation bombs.

Earlier, Ukraine's Defense Ministry's department for environmental safety and counter-mine activity reported that 1,858 people have suffered the consequences of mishandling explosives in Donbas since April 2014. 482 of these people deceased; the number of fatalities includes 21 children.
