Office of Prosecutor General of Ukraine registered a criminal proceeding due to participation of French mercenaries in Donbas conflict. These people sided with irregular forces of pro-Kremlin militants. The press department of the Ukrainian authority reported that on July 8. 

"Since 2014 till now, 20 citizens of the French Republic articipated in armed conflict against Ukraine, as part of the irregular and illegal armed formations of the Russian Federation, on the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which led to human fatalities and other severe consequences", Ukrainian prosecutors claimed.

The maximum punishment foreseen by the criminal legislation of Ukraine, in this case, is life sentence - with or without deprivation of property.

Besides, according to the Additional Protocol of Geneva Convention on protection of victims of war, these people are considered mercenaries, and their actions breach the International Convention on combating recruitment, use, funding and training of mercenaries, passed by the UN General Assembly in December 1989. 

The pre-trial investigation is underway.
