Militants of the terrorist group "Islamic State" (LIH) recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria, which they had left under the pressure of the President Bashar al-Assad’s army in March 2016. This was reported by BBC with reference to the observers.

According to available information, the militants seized a military warehouse in Palmyra and the northern and western areas of the city. Before that, within three days LIH took the position of the government army, the oil fields and the strategic heights in the vicinity.

Currently, there is a fierce fighting between Islamists and Assad’s troops in the center of Palmyra.

It is noteworthy that LIH kept the ancient city for about 10 months. During this time, the militants destroyed many historical monuments in Palmyra, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In spring 2016 the Syrian government army liberated Palmyra with support of the Russian military aircraft.
