Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has risen three positions in Women's Tennis Association (WTA). On October 28, Svitolina won in the final of the WTA tournament in Singapore: in a decisive match, the first racket of Ukraine beat American Sloane Stephens with a score of 3: 6, 6: 2, 6: 2.
The Ukrainian won all three matches in the group and came out to the semi-final from the first place. In the first match, Svitolina beat Petra Kvitová from Czech Republic, and in the second - she beat another representative of the Czech Republic - Karolína Plíšková; in the third – she won against Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. In the semi-final match, Svitolina played with Dutch player Kiki Bertens and scored 7:5, 6:7 (5:7), 6:4. Eight best tennis players of the year took part in the final tournament of the season. Svitolina participated in such competitions for the second time.
Victories and achievements
Svitolina has won 13 WTA singles titles, and two - in doubles. Her most significant achievements are at WTA, when she won three of five Premier 5-level tournaments in 2017, namely the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Italian Open, and the Canadian Open. At the 2015 French Open, she reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal where she was defeated by the former champion Ana Ivanovic. In February 2017, after winning the title in Dubai, Svitolina made history by becoming the first Ukrainian woman to break into the top 10 rankings.
In her career, Svitolina has scored victories over the likes of Grand Slam champions Ivanovic, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza, Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitová, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta and Sloane Stephens. Her first top-10 win came over Kvitová in 2014 at the Cincinnati Open, where she would go on to reach her first semifinal at a Premier-5 tournament. She also has six wins over a world No. 1 to her name, three over Kerber, two over Simona Halep and one over Serena Williams. In doubles, Svitolina has won two titles, both at the İstanbul Cup, in 2014 and 2015.
In January 2017, she took 13th place in WTA ranking and after the win in WTA in Rome, she became the sixth racket of the world. In August 2017, Svitolina took fourth place in world ranking and in September, she beat the record of all Ukrainian tennis players, having taken the third place in WTA.
In October 2017, Svitolina had her third match in the Red Group of the WTA, which took place in Singapore. Her opponent was the current world #1 Simona Halep from Romania. In order to get to the semi-finals, Svitolina had had to win in two sets and hope that Wozniacki would win over Garcia. The Ukrainian athlete did what she had to, but the French tennis player won over the Dutch competitor, so Svitolina did not get to the semi-finals. She showed a good game, however, winning 6-3, and 6-4 in her match.
Elina Svitolina avoided giving any comments to a reporter of the Russian Eurosport channel during the US Open tournament after her win in round 1. In July, Svitolina refused to participate in Moscow River Cup; the organizers eventually said the Ukrainian was supposed to join the competition, but then she gave it up for political reasons.
Ukraine’s No. 1 in tennis Elina Svitolina provided first medical aid to her opponent Mihaela Buzarnescu - right at the tennis court. The Romanian got her ankle injured and collapsed, with no doctors present at the scene. Svitolina assisted Buzarnescu before the medics eventually appeared and escorted her away from the court.
After the incident, Svitolina asked the event organizers to provide the constant presence of the medical staff at such competitions. She wished her opponent a speedy recovery.
In May, Svitolina won the final match of the WTA tournament in Rome against Romanian Simona Halep. The first racket of Ukraine beat the first racket of the world and defended the title in Rome. For the victory in the tournament, Svitolina received over 500,000 Euros.
