Trump's grandparents anglicized their name from Drumpf. His grandfather Friedrich and grandmother Elisabeth were born in Germany and emigrated to the United States. Their son Fred Trump married Donald Trump's mother Mary Ann MacLeod, who was born in Scotland and met Donald Trump's father during a vacation trip to New York.

Born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York, Donald John Trump began his entrepreneurial career at his father's company, the Trump Organization.

Donald Trump attended Fordham University for two years before transferring to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1968. (He did not get an MBA there, as is sometimes reported.)

Trump's father built affordable rental housing, mostly in Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. He had a net wealth estimated at between $250 million and $400 million at the time of his death, but his four surviving children were heirs. By 2011, Donald Trump's business dealings had boosted his fortune to $2.4 billion, according to Forbes. One estimate now places his worth at $4.1 billion, although another maintains that it is as high as $7 billion.

 He graduated from The Wharton School of Finance, and in 1984 won. Entrepreneur of the year from The Wharton School. In 1983, Trump completed development of Trump Tower, a 58-story skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. The project involved complicated negotiations with different parties for the Bonwit Teller building, the land, and the airspace above a neighboring building. When negotiations were completed in 1978, The New York Times wrote "That Mr. Trump was able to obtain the location ... is testimony to [his] persistence and to his skills as a negotiator. In 1987 Trump published autobiography “The Art of the Deal.” Also published: the sequel “Surviving at the Top,” a third book “The Art of the Comeback and a fourth “The America We Deserve. “ He has also published books on golf and “The Apprentice.”

Trump has marketed his name on a large number of building projects as well as commercial products and services, achieving mixed success doing so for himself, his partners, and investors in the projects. Many developers pay Trump to market their properties and to be the public face for their projects.

From 1996 until 2015, when he sold his interests,Trump owned part or all of the Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA beauty pageants. Among the most recognized beauty pageants in the world, the Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by the California clothing company Pacific Mills.

Although Trump has never filed for personal bankruptcy, hotel and casino businesses of his have been declared bankrupt six  times between 1991 and 2009 due to its inability to meet required payments and to re-negotiate debt with banks, owners of stock and bonds and various small businesses (unsecured creditors). The six bankruptcies were the result of over-leveraged hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City and New York.

In 1997, he opened Trump International Hotel and Tower on Central Park West at Columbus Circle. In 2002 purchased Delmonico Hotel, renamed it Trump Park Avenue. Two years later he produced/star in the Apprentice 2005 – Donald J. Trump Signature Collection includes business clothes. He also started a line called Trump Home that has furniture, bath textiles and accessories. In 2007, Donuld Trump received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Just year after that he opened Trump International Hotel & Tower/Chicago. In 2012, he was chosen as developer of the Old Post Office building in Washington, D.C., and is converting it into a luxury hotel and museum gallery. It is scheduled to open in 2016. Owns multiple golf clubs in New York, California, and Scotland. He is one of the highest paid speakers in the world. In 2011, gave two-city speech in Australia - $3 million

As of 2016, he was listed by Forbes as the 324th wealthiest person in the world, and 156th in the United States. He has listed several different party affiliations over the years and has also run as a Reform Party candidate.

Trump was married to model Ivana Zelnicek from 1977-92 and to Marla Maples from 1993-99. He married his third wife, Slovenian model Melania Knauss, on 22 January 2005. Trump’s children from his first marriage - Eric, Ivanka and Donald Jr - work for the Trump Organization. He has a young daughter, Tiffany, from his relationship with Marla and a young boy, Barron, with Melania.

On June 16, 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for President of the United States at Trump Tower in New York City. He drew attention to domestic issues such as illegal immigration, offshoring of American jobs, the U.S. national debt, crime, and Islamic terrorism. He also announced his campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again."

Trump is a Presbyterian. He has said that he began going to church at the First Presbyterian Church in the Jamaica neighborhood in Queens as a child. Trump attended Sunday school and had his confirmation at that church.

Trump says that he has never smoked cigarettes or marijuana, or consumed other drugs. He does not drink alcohol. He also has germaphobic tendencies, and prefers not to shake hands.
